This article is about the late Charley Harper. His work can be found at the official Charley Harper Art Studio online.

Charley Harper was born on August 4, 1922. He was an American Modernist artist who was born in Cincinnati and was most famous for his wildlife artwork in which he simplified the appearance of his subjects to the extent that they were reduced to their most basic details. Nonetheless he had a style that in almost instantly recognizable for anyone who is even remotely familiar with it. Chances are, you’d recognize a Charley Harper work even if you don’t know his name or couldn’t quite place the piece.

He described his work as “minimal realism,” and said he would reduce the subject to it’s most basic form and; even so, many of his pieces are not all that simple taken on a whole. The thing is, while any one subject may have been simplified to it’s core elements, there were often complex scenes in his work involving many subjects interacting with each other and this gave the simple subjects a complex depth that could not have been accomplished had each subject been painted alone.

Charley once said, when asked to describe his unique style, “When I look at a wildlife or nature subject, I don’t see the feathers in the wings, I just count the wings. I see exciting shapes, color combinations, patterns, textures, fascinating behavior and endless possibilities for making interesting pictures. I regard the picture as an ecosystem in which all the elements are interrelated, interdependent, perfectly balanced, without trimming or unutilized parts; and herein lies the lure of painting; in a world of chaos, the picture is one small rectangle in which the artist can create an ordered universe.”

Charley Harper illustrated a number of books throughout the course of his career. Magazines such as the Ford Times and The Golden Book of Biology were some notable ones. Additionally, he’s released hundreds of prints, posters, and other work available to everyone. Because birds were a major theme in his work, he often created pieces for nature organizations such as the Cincinnati Zoo and the National Park Service, in addition to a number of other government and non-profit nature-related organizations.

I was called in to assist with the Cincinnati Computer Repair, one that unexpectedly turned into a long learning experience. It was explained to me that the computer would begin to boot up and was locked up with the message memory card parity error. No problem, I thought, it’s just some defective memory. I explained to the computer operator that I would take the system to the service center, decide what memory chips were defective and replace them. I said that I would have the system back up the next day.

I took the unit to the service center and remove the cover. I saw socketed memory chips and four rows. All I needed to do was determine what ships were defective and replace them. I had no documentation on the motherboard, so I contacted the manufacturer for assistance. I was told that a schematic was not available, but they would fax me a copy of the installation manual. The installation manual contains memory layout and jumper setting in.

I decided to remove two bags of chips and configure the unit for 512 kB of memory. I would test a bank one at a time to narrow the problem down to a single bank of chips. The system worked fine with 512 kB, so I added another bank and retest of the system. This set exhibited no problem. I installed the last bank in the system appeared normal. However, after trying to load a program, the parity error reappeared. I purchased new chips and installed them. The system appeared normal, but it didn’t take long for problems to reappear. I contacted the motherboard manufacturer and they were convinced the newly installed memory was bad. To test the new memory, I reconfigured the system for 576 kB using the new memory chips. I tested the system and everything appeared normal. I figure the problem must be in the memory addressing or parity circuit of the last bank. Since I had no documentation, I was left to guessing which chips might be bad, based on their function in proximity to the defective bank.

I spent several hours tracing the PC foils with no good suspects. To the motherboard was an 8088 we decided to buy a new board. Typically it’s easier to replace the board than to spend the labor and man-hours trying to repair it. In addition the board could be repaired by third-party vendor for less than my labor costs. We contacted a local supplier and obtained an 80286 motherboard for $125.

The new board was installed the system was returned to the office. A couple of days later I received a call. It seems my problems were not over. The computer operator explained she was getting an error when she tried to pull up file whenever she mistakenly entered the name. System would lock up and her only option was to reset the machine, losing all her work. The problem only occurred while running WordPerfect. All other software ran with no problem.

Not being an expert at this particular word processing program, I study the manual for clues. I contacted the manufacturer of the software and asked for help. No suggestions would remedy the problem. I tried reloading the software, and several memory options, but it’s still locked up. I tried loading the software on another machine and it worked fine.

I contacted a local vendor for help. He had never heard of the problem, but he let me speak to a software expert. We tried several options settings but no change. I question whether the motherboard could be at fault. It seemed like a software problem, since it only happened with WordPerfect, but I asked him to send me another motherboard.

I install the new motherboard and the problem disappeared. After calling the vendor to explain the motherboard fixed the problem, he explained that he had found out that his motherboard had some bios problems that made it not 100% IBM-compatible.

Maintaining a new home in the Cincinnati area can be a challenge. There are all types of things to keep in mind that you’ll have to prepare for and protect your home and garden against.

Weather and Replacement Windows

One of the biggest of these is weather. Cincinnati has extreme weather conditions; not to say it’s anything like Canada or other locations further North, but it does have large variations in temperature each year, which can wreak havoc on your home windows as well as your landscaping and lawn.

Summers in Cincinnati can get up to 110 degrees with Winter temperatures reaching 0 – 10 degrees. Such large swings in temperature can not only damage the windows in your home, but it can significantly affect your energy bill. Instead of only needing windows that keep either cold or warm air in, you need home windows that can keep both cold and warm air in to preserve energy and reduce your utility costs.

Additionally, frost and snow can make it challenging to grow certain types of plants in your home’s garden as well as limit the types of grass you should use on your lawn.

Tips for Better Landscaping

There’s no question that you need to understand the environment in which you live in order to get the best replacement windows in Cincinnati; the same goes for finding the best Cincinnati landscaping.

Because of the cold air, it’s important to choose the right type of grass for your lawn. There are many different types of grass, but Kentucky Bluegrass is one of the most popular for climates like the Cincinnati area. The problem with many other types of grass is that they can’t survive, or at least they can’t thrive, in anything but temperate climates.

It’s also important that when choosing a Cincinnati lawn care specialist, you consult with him or her about which types of plants you should purchase that will be able to withstand the cold Winter and hot Summer months as well as be easy to maintain. There are just such plants that still look good but make managing your home’s landscaping much easier.

Here’s a rather cheesy video that should give you some insight into choosing a landscaping company:

Click here to view the video on YouTube.

Tips for Finding Replacement Windows

When searching for replacement windows in the Cincinnati area, you should speak with a number of different companies in the area to get an idea of pricing, level of service, etc. There are quite a few companies out there, and relatively few really good ones. A good place to start would be to search the internet for “Cincinnati replacement windows.” This will give you a list of window companies in the Cincinnati area that you can contact.

Another important thing to do when shopping for new windows is to ask for customer references. It’s important to be able to speak with past customers about their experience with the company you’re considering hiring.

Finally, when you’ve narrowed your search down to a few options, you should search for each of the companies names on the internet and see if you can find any negative reviews. There are a number of websites out there where people can post reviews of window companies and searching for the company’s name can help you find those reviews. Be wary of any company with a lot of negative reviews.

Here’s a video on how to choose the right replacement windows for your home:

Click here to view the video on YouTube.

Conclusion

Hopefully these tips will help you better care for your home, both inside and out. Finding a great landscaper is important to maintaining a beautiful exterior and choosing the right replacement window company will ensure you get the windows you need at a fair price and with great service.

Bridge Crane

A company that needs to install a bridge crane or hoist crane no longer has to build one from scratch or order a custom built crane. Such companies can now save money by ordering a crane kit.

A crane kit is a ready assembled piece of equipment that includes all of the components for a large scale bridge or hoist crane. The average kit will contain hoists, festoon, controls and radio controls.

Instead of a crane built all the company has to do is order the kit and have it shipped to their location. Once the crane arrives it can be assembled on site and installed.

Advantages to Crane Kits

There are several advantages to using kits instead of custom built cranes. The first is that the company doesn’t have to pay extra for design and custom building. Instead all the customer has to pay for is the crane assembly itself, shipping and installation.

Another advantage is that the kits use ready made off the shelf components. Since custom work is done, replacement parts won’t have to be specially fabricated. This can save a company time and money.

Production will not be held up because components for the crane have to be custom made and shipped to the location. Using kits will also reduce other service costs because service personnel will be more familiar with the kits.

Ordering a Crane Kit

There are a number of companies out there that construct kits and ship them all over North America. Typical kit cranes will come in 10 ton, 25 ton and 45 ton lift capacity versions.

A typical 10-ton lift capacity would include four top running girder cranes mounted on 600 foot runways. This could be used for a wide variety of industrial and other applications.

To order a kit, a manufacturer will have to specify the tonnage they want to lift and the conditions in the yard or building where they want it installed. It is not possible to install some kits in some buildings or yards.

Customization of Crane Kits

There are many circumstances in which a crane kit will have to be customized. Customers that want to lift really large loads usually over 40 tons will probably have to order a custom kit.

So will companies with very small buildings or work areas and those that want to lift specialized loads. Kits can be ordered with specialized controls and other modifications.

The modified kits will naturally cost more than the ordinary kits. Keeping the amount of specialization and modification low should reduce kit costs.

Used Crane Kits

A good way to save money on overhead cranes is to order a used or refurbished crane kit. Most of the crane manufacturers refurbish older equipment for future use.

Ordering a used crane can save a company money and time because new construction won’t be necessary. Manufacturers may not begin work on new kits until they have an order to fill but they may have the refurbished products in stock and ready to ship.

More and more consumers every day are doing nearly all of their shopping online and whether it be consumer products, b2b services, or consulting, businesses need to be found online and they need to be found quickly and before their competitors. Companies like SEO Cincinnati run what are called “Search Engine Optimization” campaigns, with the express goal of helping clients improve their rankings in the search engines (especially Google).

According to leaked AOL search data, nearly all people using search engines click on the top 3 results (nearly 75% of all clicks go to the top 3). This means if your business is even ranked on page 2, you’re probably not benefiting from the search engines like you could be.

The primary reason for this is that internet users have short attention spans. They come online to find information quickly and they don’t like to waste time. The entire success of Google is based on the idea that information should be made as easy to find as possible. Google invests an enormous amount of resources into ensuring it’s search results are as relevant to whatever the user is searching for as possible. Don’t get me wrong, other search engines like Bing and Yahoo are doing the same thing…it’s just that Google did it first and they did it better, so they now enjoy a majority market share in the search business.

One thing most business owners are completely unaware of is exactly how Google ranks websites. This is a pretty in-depth topic so I won’t go into it in too much detail here, but I will say that SEO (Search Engine Optimization) involves understanding how Google and other search engines rank websites, and making changes that help Google to rank a website higher.

Many web design companies are offering SEO services now, including Web Design Cincinnati, and some of them are very good at it, but it’s important to interview a company and get references and examples of other websites they’ve been able to rank in the search engines. Obviously price is an important factor, but don’t let it play the majority role in your decision to hire an SEO company. The reason is that SEO companies vary dramatically in their strategies and, because it’s such a complicated field that is constantly changing, many of the strategies that worked last year don’t work anymore.

I’ve personally seen SEO companies offering services that haven’t worked at all in several years…they’re simply working on outdated information, so you absolutely have to ensure the company you work with has solid examples of rankings they’ve acheived for their clients; and ask for recent examples because the way Google ranks websites is constantly changing and what worked last year may not work this year.

Obviously, keeping on top of these changes in the way search engines rank websites takes a lot of time and research and so you can usually be sure that the cheapest companies probably aren’t going to be able to get you ranked.

The other thing you should consider when getting SEO pricing is, how much more traffic and revenue might be generated if we rank in the top 3 for our search terms? Compare the quote any SEO company gives you with the expected revenue and increased traffic. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

I’ve recently had the pleasure of discovering electronic cigarettes and I have to admit that I’m absolutely crazy about these things. I used to smoke a pack and a half of cigarettes every day and I was having all kinds of health problems…coughing in the morning, barely able to exercise at all.

About 3 months ago a friend recommended electronic cigarettes as an alternative and so I gave them a shot. That might have been the best decision I ever made. I’ve completely quit smoking real cigarettes and it wasn’t even difficult (unlike every other method to quit out there). I actually ran 6 miles yesterday and felt just fine; and while it took me a while to work up to that, I feel so much better I can’t even describe the change.

So, for any of you smokers out there looking for an alternative to all that nasty tar and cancer-causing crap, here’s a brief overview of electronic cigarettes. If there’s anything I didn’t cover here, feel free to let me know.

Electronic Cigarettes

What are electronic cigarettes? They are relatively new devices that were invented with the intent of being an alternative to regular tobacco cigarettes.

The primary difference between electronic cigarettes and tobacco cigarettes is that electronic cigarettes are supposed to contain fewer cancer-causing chemicals that traditional tobacco cigarettes. The benefit of this is that for those who are addicted to smoking, they can use electronic cigarettes instead of tobacco and it’s supposedly quite a bit safer.

Comparison of ECigs

First of all, if you’re interested in electronic cigarettes, you should check out this electronic cigarette comparison so you understand the different brands of ecigs and how they differ from one another. On that same site I also found some electronic cigarette reviews, which helped me decide which company to purchase from.

Price of Electronic Cigarettes

One of the biggest differences between electronic cigarettes and tobacco cigarettes are the prices. Tobacco cigarettes can cost anywhere from $6 – $10 per pack, depending on where you live. Electronic cigarettes are a bit different in that they don’t come in packs. Rather the ecig device consists of a battery, an atomizer, and a cartridge which contains a liquid nicotine solution. Instead of pulling out a new smoke like you would with a tobacco cigarettes, you simply replace the cartridge on an electronic cigarette when it runs dry.

Cartridges on electronic cigarettes generally last quite a bit longer than a standard cigarette. Each company varies, but the average is around 5-10 cigarettes per cartridge. So in order to compare the price, you have to consider the cost of the cartridge against the cost of a standard cigarette.

Electronic cigarette cartridges cost about $1-2 each, which equals about 10-20 cigarettes. By comparison, a tobacco cigarette costs anywhere from $0.30 – $0.50 each (based on $6 – 10 per pack). If you assume you’ll get the equivalent of 10 cigarettes out of an e-cig cartridge (a modest estimate), then an e-cig cartridge at $2 is equivalent to $3 – $5 of tobacco cigarettes. So a packs worth of electronic cigarette cartridges will cost you $4, a savings of $2 – $6 over tobacco cigarettes. Not bad.

Health Benefits

In addition to the cost savings, it’s suggested by many smoking and addiction experts that electronic cigarettes are likely significantly less harmful than tobacco cigarettes. The primary harmful materials in a tobacco cigarette are what’s known as “by-products of combustion.” In laymans terms, the bad stuff in a tobacco cigarette comes mostly from inhaling smoke from burning the tobacco, rather than the tobacco itself. Since electronic cigarettes don’t burn anything, rather they vaporize a nicotine solution just like a humidifier vaporizes water, so they’re generally thought of as being much safer.

It’s important to note that the safety of electronic cigarettes has not been fully studied as of yet, so keep that in mind.

Appearance and Functionality

Electronic cigarettes work just like tobacco cigarettes. You take a drag, the vapor fills your lungs, and you exhale. The primary differences are how you put the items together. Obviously there’s no assembly with a tobacco cigarette…you just pull one out of a pack and light it. Electronic cigarettes are slightly different. When the cartridge runs dry, you slide it off the device and slide a new cartridge on. Not much effort really at all, but slightly different from a tobacco cigarette.

The other big difference is that there’s no smoke with an electronic cigarette. E-Cigs vaporize a liquid nicotine solutions, so rather than inhaling actual smoke, you inhale water vapor with nicotine mixed in. This difference is the primary reason electronic cigarettes are thought to be significantly less harmful than tobacco cigarettes, and likely to cause less cancer.

Electronic cigarettes don’t look a whole lot different from real cigarettes. In fact, from a distance, you wouldn’t notice someone who was smoking an electronic cigarette at all. Some companies sell devices that are very large and look strange, so you’ll probably want to steer clear of those products unless you like drawing attention to yourself.

I prefer to stick with a brand that looks just like a real cigarette. All of the companies have plenty of pictures of their products for you to browse before purchasing so you can get an idea of the size and appearance of each company’s electronic cigarettes. Some notable electronic cigarettes that look much more like real cigarettes than others are Blu Cigs and NJoy. These two companies in particular have gone to great lengths to make sure that their devices look very much like traditional tobacco cigarettes.

Most ecigs have a small LED at the tip of the battery which lights up when you take a drag. This LED serves two purposes. The first is to simulate the look of a real cigarette. You’ll notice when you take a hit from a real cigarette, the cherry glows bright enough to see quite clearly. The LED on an electronic cigarette does the same thing. The other purpose of the LED is to serve as an indicator that your battery needs charging. If you take a drag on your e-cig and the LED doesn’t light up, you know you’ve got a dead battery and it’s time for a recharge.

I suppose there’s a third reason for the LED, depending on what company you purchase from. Some companies manufacture an electronic cigarette with an LED in colors other than amber. The most common color for these LEDs is blue. The reason for this is so that you can more easily smoke your electronic cigarette indoors in locations covered by smoking bans. Being able to smoke in bars and restaurants is a big selling point for electronic cigarettes to many people. The devices are not, in fact, covered by smoking bans since they only emit water vapor instead of noxious smoke. Because of this, you’re allowed to smoke electronic cigarettes even in bars and restaurants that have banned tobacco smoking.

However, if you purchase an electronic cigarette with an amber colored LED at the tip of the battery, this could very easily be mistaken for a traditional tobacco smoke, and you’ll likely have some explaining to do when you “light up.” The products with blue LEDs are designed to prevent such an awkward situation. It’s quite clear that you’re not smoking a real cigarette when the blue LED lights up, and by now, many bar and restaurant owners are accustomed to the color and the fact that they are okay to smoke.
